British Passport Boston

Boston is one of America’s oldest cities and has a rich history that attracts over 20 million tourists each year, including 215,000 British visitors.  Known as the “intellectual capital of the United States”, Boston is a center of education that has more than 350,000 college students from around the world, making up over 7% of the metro area’s population.  Greater Boston is the eleventh-most populous metropolitan area in the United States with a population of 4.9 million people, and includes towns such as Cambridge, Brookline, Quincy, Newton, Waltham, and Medford.

English settlers came to this region in 1620, establishing the Plymouth Colony in what is today Plymouth, Massachusetts, just 35 miles from Boston.  The city of Boston, Massachusetts was named in 1630 by English settlers after the town of Boston in Lincolnshire, England.  Boston was the biggest town in the American colonies and was the site of several events that led up to the American Revolution.  Skirmishes between the British and American colonists started in 1775 just outside of Boston (Lexington and Concord).  The Revolution’s first major battle occurred just two months later in Boston, known as the Battle of Bunker Hill.  The British withdrew from the city in March 1776, but the war would continue that summer in New York.

It is this bit of history along with multitude of cultural attractions that make Boston an interesting destination for American tourists.  Besides the lobster rolls, clam chowder, and historic taverns, perhaps the biggest draw for international visitors are the college campuses of Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Tufts University.  Boston has 35 universities, colleges, and community colleges along with many of the country’s best research and teaching hospitals.  These educational institutions play a major role in the city’s economy and bring in visitors from all over the world.

Greater Boston has the sixth-largest economy in the country and the twelfth-largest in the world.  Boston is a startup and innovation hub thanks to its many world-renowned institutions of higher education and research facilities, coupled with its proximity to many of the country’s leading private equity and financial services firms.  Greater Boston is home to over 1,000 biotechnology firms and is the center of the nation’s biotechnology and bio-pharmaceuticals industries, including British firms such as Shire Pharmaceuticals and AstraZeneca.  There are over 230 British firms operating in the state of Massachusetts that employ over 40,000 local workers.

Logan International Airport (BOS) is Boston’s international airport and is the largest airport in New England.  Boston is the shortest direct flight from the U.K. to the United States, and there are 4 airlines that provide nonstop service from London-Heathrow: British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, American Airlines, and Delta Airlines.  Norwegian Air offers nonstop service from London-Gatwick and Delta Airlines also offers seasonal service to Edinburgh, Scotland.  Amtrak, American’s passenger railroad line, provides service to New York City from Boston.

Boston is home to one of eight British consulates in the United States, providing services to British nationals in Connecticut (Except Fairfield County), Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.  If you are a British national and require urgent assistance, you can reach the consulate by calling +1 617 245 4500.  The British consulate in Boston can also provide an emergency passport if you are stuck abroad and need to return quickly to the United Kingdom.
