British Passport Calgary
Calgary is the fourth-largest city in Canada and is the most populous city in the province of Alberta. Located in western Canada, just 80 km east of the Rocky Mountains, Calgary is a jumping off point for tourists visiting the mountain resort towns of Banff, Lake Louise, and Canmore. Alberta is also the center of Canada’s oil and gas industry, a lucrative business that has helped turn Calgary into one of the country’s wealthiest cities. The Calgary metropolitan area—known as the Calgary Region—has a population of 1.4 million people and includes 198 communities within its city limits along with the municipalities of Airdrie, Cochrane, Chestermere, Okotoks, and Strathmore.
David Thompson, a British-born fur trader and cartographer, was one of the first Europeans to visit this area in 1787. Calgary began to grow as an important commercial center in the late 19th century with the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway. With its abundance of prairie land and railroad transportation links, Calgary became a center of Canada’s cattle ranching and meatpacking industries. These are still important industries in the Calgary Region today and play an important role in the city’s heritage and identity. Each year in July the city hosts the world-famous Calgary Stampede, a rodeo and festival celebrating the cowboy traditions of this region.
The Calgary Stampede attracts around 1.25 million visitors each year and provides about $500 million in economic impact to the Calgary Region. As headquarters for many of Canada’s largest companies in the oil and gas industry, Calgary hosts an estimated 1.5 million business visitors each year, supplying a strong base of customers for the city’s hospitality and tourism sector. Oil and gas is also the linchpin for the growth of peripheral industries in Calgary providing financial, professional, scientific, and technical services. Farming and food production is another important driver of the local economy and Calgary serves as a hub for agricultural research and innovation.
Overall annual visitors to the Calgary Region have been approaching 7 million people in recent years as more and more international visitors from the United States, United Kingdom, and China are discovering the growing list of cultural attractions and events the downtown core of the city has to offer. While Calgary has become a tourist attraction in its own right, just an hour and a half west of the city by car is Banff National Park, where visitors will find majestic snow-capped Rocky Mountain peaks and beautiful turquoise glacial lakes, including world-famous Lake Louise. Other natural attractions include Kootenay, Yoho, Glacier, and Jasper National Parks.
Calgary International Airport (YYC) is the primary commercial airport serving domestic and international passengers in the Calgary Region. YYC is the fourth-busiest airport in Canada and has nonstop service to 88 destinations, including international flights to Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. Air Canada provides nonstop service to London-Heathrow throughout the year and British Airways has seasonal nonstop service to London-Heathrow during the spring and summer months. Air Canada and WestJet both provide several nonstop flights throughout the day to Vancouver.
