British Passport Charlotte

Charlotte is the 23rd-most populous city in the United States and is the most populous city in the state of North Carolina.  Known as the Queen City, this metropolis of 2.6 million people has been one of the country’s fastest-growing cities the past two decades.  Charlotte’s youthful population, low cost of living, and geographical location in America’s Sun Belt, have made it an attractive destination for business investment.  The Charlotte metropolitan area is a sixteen-county region that stretches into the state of South Carolina and includes the towns of Concord, Gastonia, Huntersville, Kannapolis, Indian Trail, Mooresville, Monroe, Salisbury, Matthews, Cornelius, Mint Hill, Statesville, Shelby, Rock Hill (SC), and Fort Mill (SC).

Charlotte is the third largest banking center in the United States and is consistently ranked as one of the top ten best places for business in the country.  Charlotte is the corporate headquarters for both Bank of America and Truist Bank.  The city also hosts the largest number of Wells Fargo employees and serves as headquarters for their investment banking activities.  Of course Charlotte is more than just a banking center—there are over 3,000 manufacturers in the Charlotte Region including Honeywell, Nucor, Sealed Air, JELD-WEN, Ingersoll Rand, and Albermarle Corporation; it is home to several companies operating in the retail sector such as Lowe’s and Belk; several food companies call Charlotte home including British firm Compass Group.

With over 120 British companies operating in the Charlotte Region, the United Kingdom has a strong presence in this part of the country and employs nearly 30,000 local workers.  The U.K has shared interest in the region’s banking, technology, life sciences, and manufacturing industries (British defense and aerospace firm BAE Systems has a large presence in Charlotte).  In recent years, Charlotte and the state of North Carolina have seen an increase in the growth of startups in the advanced manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, and financial technology sectors.  In 2017 the U.K government opened a trade office in the nearby city of Raleigh to facilitate business ties with this region.

While Charlotte is a great city for business, it also happens to be an even better place to live.  The city itself has plenty of shopping, arts and culture, nightlife and entertainment, along with many bars and pubs offering local craft beer and cocktails, and restaurants offering contemporary American and international cuisine.  Located just 1 ½ hours from the mountains of western North Carolina by car, Charlotte is within easy reach of weekend getaways where visitors can enjoy hiking, whitewater rafting, kayaking, camping, or even luxurious mountain home retreats.  On the other side of the state, some of the country’s best beaches are located just 3 ½ hours from the city.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is the primary commercial airport serving the Charlotte metropolitan area and is the 11th-busiest airport in the United States. There are 11 airlines providing nonstop service to 178 destinations, including 38 international destinations.  American Airlines provides nonstop service to Charlotte from London-Heathrow.  For those individuals that are making a connecting flight out of Atlanta or need to visit the British consulate, there are several flights throughout the day to ATL on Delta and American Airlines.

Charlotte does not have a British consulate, so if you are a British national living in or visiting the state of North Carolina or South Carolina and require urgent assistance, you must call the British consulate in Atlanta by dialing +1 404-954-7700.  The British consulate in Atlanta can also provide an emergency passport if you are stuck abroad and need to return quickly to the United Kingdom.  It is about a 3 ½ hour drive to Atlanta from Charlotte on Interstate 85 traveling south.
