British Passport Detroit
Detroit is the second-largest city in the Midwest (after Chicago) and is better known by its nickname “Motor City”, or “Motown”, because of its prominence as the global center of the automotive industry. Although the city has certainly had its share of ups and downs, Detroit remains an important and influential American city. The Detroit metropolitan area, known as Metro Detroit, has a population of 4.3 million and is the fourteenth-largest metropolis in the United States. Metro Detroit includes the towns of Dearborn, Royal Oak, Auburn Hills, Troy, Livonia, Southfield, Rochester Hills, Warren, Pontiac, Sterling Heights, and other municipalities.
The French were the first Europeans to settle the region and construct a fort on the Detroit River to protect their interest in the fur trade, however, it was the British that took control of Detroit in 1760 at the conclusion of the Seven Years’ War. The British withdrew from the region after the Revolutionary War and Detroit became an American settlement by the end of the 18th century. British and American forces tussled again in the War of 1812, but Detroit would become firmly established as an American city in the 19th century and emerged as a center of shipping and manufacturing for this fast-growing country.
Detroit native Henry Ford built his first automobile in 1896 and would go on to establish the Ford Motor Company in 1903. Ford and other automotive entrepreneurs such as Ransom Olds and Walter Chrysler transformed Detroit into an industrial powerhouse that would employ hundreds of thousands of Americans. Ford would also employ thousands of British by establishing a Manchester, U.K. factory in 1913. Today the automotive industry still employs thousands of people in Metro Detroit and the state of Michigan has over 1,600 automotive-related manufacturing facilities.
Detroit may not be on the top of the list as a tourist destination for British visitors, but this is a city that should not be overlooked, especially for music lovers. Nearly 16 million people visit Metro Detroit annually. The city hosts several major events and music festivals each year including Dally in the Alley, Movement Electronic Music Festival, and Detroit Jazz Festival. Detroit has a long history of producing musical talent across many different genres and has several prominent music venues including The Fillmore, Fox Theatre, the Majestic, and Saint Andrew’s Hall, along with many other smaller venues and dive bars with legendary histories.
Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) is the primary international airport in the region and serves over 140 nonstop destinations, including 30 international destinations. DTW is a hub for Delta Airlines’ Asia routes from the Eastern United States, but the airline also provides nonstop service to London-Heathrow. Detroit is a major center of trade between the United States and Canada and has three international border crossings that connect to Windsor, Canada: the Ambassador Bridge, Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, and Michigan Central Railway Tunnel.
Detroit does not have a British consulate, so if you are a British national living in or visiting the state of Michigan and require urgent assistance, you must call the British consulate in Chicago by dialing +1 312-970-3800. The British consulate in Chicago can also provide an emergency passport if you are stuck abroad and need to return quickly to the United Kingdom. It is about a 4-hour drive to Chicago from Detroit on Interstate 94 traveling west.
