British Passport Honolulu
Honolulu is the largest city in the state of Hawaii and is the most-populous city in the Oceania region (excluding cities in Australia and New Zealand). Honolulu has a population of 390,000 people making this city the 56th most-populous metropolitan area in the United States, while the Urban Honolulu Metropolitan Statistical Area (this includes the entire population of the island of Oahu, the island where Honolulu is located) has a population of 975,000. The state of Hawaii is the only island state in America, and includes 8 main islands: Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui, and Hawaii (known as the “Big Island”).
As in many other parts of the world, the British have made their mark here starting when Captain James Cook arrived in the Hawaiian Islands in 1778 (he set foot on the island of Kauai) and Captain William Brown of Great Britain was the first European to reach Oahu when he sailed into Honolulu Harbor in 1794. Although James Cook was killed by locals in 1779, Great Britain would go on to establish friendly relations with the Hawaiian people thanks to the work of Captain George Vancouver. To this day the state flag of Hawaii still contains the Union Jack in its design and Beretania Street (the local way of pronouncing Britain) is one of the busiest streets in Honolulu.
Although Hawaii is one of the smallest states in America and is located about 2,400 miles from the nearest cities on the mainland, the Aloha State has a vibrant economy based on tourism, defense, agriculture, fishing, manufacturing, healthcare, real estate, and financial services. The U.S. government maintains 11 military bases throughout Hawaii, and Honolulu is the headquarters for the United States Pacific Command. Honolulu is known as the “Crossroads of the Pacific” and serves as a hub for international trade, banking, transportation, and research for the Asia Pacific and Oceania regions.
Over 10 million visitors come to Hawaii each year, driving the demand for much of the goods and services provided by other industries across the state. It is no exaggeration to say that Hawaii is one of the most beautiful destinations on the planet. Each island has its own unique characteristics. While many consider Maui and Kauai to have the most natural beauty, Oahu has the best mix of gorgeous beaches and big city attractions. There are relaxing beaches for swimming such as Lanikai and Waikiki, and other beaches such as Waimea Bay which are well known for surfing. Honolulu also has plenty of cultural and historical attractions for all types of visitors.
Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) is the primary commercial airport in Honolulu and main international gateway to the Hawaiian Islands. HNL has nonstop flights to several international destinations across the Asia Pacific and Oceania regions, including New Zealand and Australia. There are no nonstop flights between HNL and the United Kingdom, but there are many connecting flight locations throughout North America including San Diego, Los Angeles, San Jose, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Denver, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta, Washington-Dulles, New York, Boston, and seasonal connections through Toronto and Calgary.
Honolulu does not have a British consulate, so if you are a British national living in or visiting the state of Hawaii and require urgent assistance, you must call the British consulate in Los Angeles by dialing +1 310-789-0031. The British consulate in Los Angeles can also provide an emergency passport if you are stuck abroad and need to return quickly to the United Kingdom. There are several flights each day from Honolulu to Los Angeles on Hawaiian, Delta, American, and United Airlines.
