British Passport Houston

Greater Houston is the fifth most-populous metropolitan area in the United States with a population of over 7 million residents.  Houston is one of America’s most ethnically diverse cities.  With over 145 different languages being spoken in this global city, it is no surprise Houston has plenty of great restaurants offering delicious cuisine from all over the world.  This is a fast-growing and youthful city that attracts international investors and businesspeople.  There are about 50,000 U.K. citizens living in the Houston area, many of them Scots working in the oil and gas industry.

Houston is named after General Sam Houston, an American soldier and politician of Scottish and Irish heritage.  The city emerged in the mid-19th century as a commercial hub for the cotton industry.  Oil was discovered in 1901, changing the course of history and turning this muggy Texas backwater near the Gulf of Mexico into the energy capital of the world.  There are 4,600 energy-related firms operating in the Houston area, making this an important city for British energy and engineering companies.  Houston’s sister city is Aberdeen, Scotland—the energy capital of the United Kingdom.

While the oil and gas industry has been the heart and soul of Houston’s economy for over a century, the city is also home to the Texas Medical Center, which is the largest medical complex in the world.  This complex employs over 100,000 people and collaborates with researchers from all over the world, including British scientists and doctors doing cancer research from Cambridge University, Oxford University, Manchester University, and University of Leeds.  Houston is also home to the Johnson Space Center, where human spaceflight training, research, and flight control is conducted for NASA’s space missions.

George Bush Intercontinental Airport—Houston’s primary airport—has nonstop flights to every inhabited continent and is a popular connecting airport to many Latin American destinations.  British Airways and United Airlines have nonstop routes to London, and Singapore Airlines provides nonstop service to Manchester.  William P. Hobby Airport is Houston’s secondary airport, and has both domestic and international commercial fights, mainly through Southwest Airlines.

Houston is home to one of eight British consulates in the United States, providing services to British nationals in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Oklahoma.  If you are a British national and require urgent assistance, you can reach the consulate by calling +1 713 210 4000.  The British consulate in Houston can also provide an emergency passport if you are stuck abroad and need to return quickly to the United Kingdom.
