British Passport Las Vegas

Las Vegas is the largest city in the state of Nevada and located in the Mojave Desert, sandwiched between California and Arizona.  The Las Vegas metropolitan area, known as the Las Vegas Valley, includes Clark County and the cities of North Las Vegas, Henderson, and Boulder City, as well as several other unincorporated communities and neighborhoods.  The Las Vegas Valley has a population of 2.3 million people and has been America’s fastest growing city the past decade.  Although Las Vegas ranks only as the 28th-most populous city in the United States, there could be as many as 300,000 tourists visiting the city on any given day.

Las Vegas is known as “America’s Playground” and is one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations.  The city receives over 42 million visitors a year, including 750,000 visitors from the United Kingdom.  Las Vegas has over 150,000 hotels rooms—more than any other city in the world.  Tourists come for the variety of entertainment options that include shopping, fine dining, nightclubs, live shows, and gambling at one of the area’s 136 casinos.  Las Vegas also has plenty of outdoor activities such as boating on Lake Mead, kayaking on the Colorado River, cycling through Red Rock Canyon, skiing on Mt. Charleston, and golfing at one of the city’s 50 courses.

Las Vegas is a popular destination for conventions and has about 6.5 million people visiting the city each year for this purpose.  There are over 20,000 annual conventions, meetings, and trade shows including the Consumer Electronics Show, World of Concrete, Global Gaming Expo, National Finals Rodeo, National Association of Broadcasters, MAGIC (fashion retail), JCK (jewelry), SEMA (automotive products), among many others.  Thanks to the low cost of getting a marriage license and multitude of entertainment options for wedding guests, Las Vegas is also known as the “Marriage Capital of the World” and hosts over 120,000 weddings each year.

“America’s Playground” is more than just a city people like to visit—it is also a place people like to live, including an estimated 30,000 British.  Its sunny weather, low cost of living, comfortable suburban neighborhoods, nonstop entertainment, and outdoor activities make Las Vegas a great place for families, location independent entrepreneurs, and retirees.  While the leisure and hospitality industry is the engine that drives the local economy, there are other industries operating in Las Vegas such as mining, agriculture, higher education, aerospace, military and defense.  In recent years the city has also become an attractive location for call centers.

McCarran International Airport (LAS) is the primary international airport for Las Vegas and serves 50 million passenger per year.  LAS has nonstop flights to over 140 destinations, including London, United Kingdom.  British Airways provides nonstop service to London-Heathrow and London-Gatwick, while Virgin Atlantic offers nonstop service to London-Heathrow.  The flight takes around 10 hours.  There are over 700 flights per week on multiple airlines providing service to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) from Las Vegas.

Las Vegas does not have a British consulate, so if you are a British national living in or visiting the state of Nevada and require urgent assistance, you must call the British consulate in Los Angeles by dialing +1 310-789-0031.  The British consulate in Los Angeles can also provide an emergency passport if you are stuck abroad and need to return quickly to the United Kingdom.  It is about a 4-hour drive to Los Angeles from Las Vegas on Interstate 15 traveling south and then Interstate 10 west.
