The Greater Miami Area is the seventh-largest metropolitan area in the United States and has a population of 6.2 million people.  The metropolitan area is composed of Miami-Dade County, Broward County, and Palm Beach County.  Its main cities include Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Hialeah, Pembroke Pines, Hollywood, and Boca Raton.  This is a diverse community where 40% of the population was born in another country.

Nearly 60% of Greater Miami’s population is Hispanic.  The majority of Hispanics are of Cuban origin but there is a strong representation of Mexicans, Nicaraguans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Colombians, Venezuelans, and Brazilians.  Other Caribbean nations such as Haiti, Jamaica, and the Bahamas are also represented along with a growing community of Russians.  Europeans—both temporary visitors and permanent residents—are found throughout Miami including British, German, French, and Italians.  Miami (and all of Florida) is also an extremely popular destination for Canadians, who make up the largest group of tourists to the state.

Juan Ponce de León was the first European explorer to set eyes on the area in 1513 and claimed the land for Spain.  Spain traded Florida to the British in 1763 after their victory over France in the Sever Year’s War.  In 1882, British immigrants Isabella and Charles Peacock, built the area’s first hotel in Coconut Grove (a Miami neighborhood).  South Florida remained undeveloped for many years until Henry Flagler, an American businessman, connected Biscayne Bay by rail in 1896.  The ensuing Florida Land Boom of the 1920’s and industrial development during World War II brought sustained population growth and permanency to the area.

Miami is known as the “Capital of Latin America”.  This moniker is given to the city not only because of its large Hispanic population, but also because of its role as a business hub for the Latin American region.  Miami is the headquarters of Latin American operations for over 1400 multinational companies, including several British companies such as Diageo, Bupa, Skyscanner, Virgin Voyages, and Lloyd’s of London.  The U.K. is the biggest foreign investor in Florida, employing over 40,000 people across the state.  An estimated 400,000 U.K. citizens live in Florida and own hundreds of small businesses throughout the state.

Miami International Airport (MIA) is the primary airport serving international passengers and see nearly 1 million British travelers passing through its terminals each year.  American Airlines, British Airways, and Virgin Atlantic provide service to Miami through London Heathrow while Norwegian Air provides service from London Gatwick.  MIA is the gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean and offers more flights to the region that any other airport in the United States.  Miami is also the “Cruise Capital of the World” and is a major gateway port for passenger cruises.  In fact, Port Miami is the busiest cruise port in the world.

Miami is home to one of eight British consulates in the United States, providing services to British nationals in Florida, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands.  If you are a British national and require urgent assistance, you can reach the consulate by calling +1 305 400 6400.  The British consulate in Miami can also provide an emergency passport if you are stuck abroad and need to return quickly to the United Kingdom.
