The Greater Miami Area is the seventh-largest metropolitan area in the United States and has a population of 6.2 million people. South Florida remained undeveloped for many years until Henry Flagler, an American businessman, connected Biscayne Bay by rail in 1896. The ensuing Florida Land Boom of the 1920’s and industrial development during World War II brought sustained population growth and permanency to the area.

Miami is known as the “Capital of Latin America”. This moniker is given to the city not only because of its large Hispanic population, but also because of its role as a business hub for the Latin American region. Miami is the headquarters of Latin American operations for over 1400 multinational companies, including several British companies such as Diageo, Bupa, Skyscanner, Virgin Voyages, and Lloyd’s of London. The U.K. is the biggest foreign investor in Florida, employing over 40,000 people across the state.
