British Passport New York

New York is America’s most prominent city and some proud New Yorkers may consider it the “Capital of the World”.  Certainly a case can be made for this title since the city is the headquarters of the United Nations; it is one of the most important economic regions in the world; it has the highest number of billionaires of any city in the world; it is the most linguistically diverse city in the world; its metropolitan region has the largest foreign-born population; it is one of the most preeminent cities in the world for arts and culture; it has some of the best restaurants in the world and without a doubt, has the best pizza!

Giovanni da Verrazzano was the first European to arrive into the waters of New York Harbor, but it was English explorer Henry Hudson that was the first to sail up the river that divides Manhattan and New Jersey, now known as the Hudson River.  He made it to present-day Albany and claimed the area for the Dutch East India Company.  This region would remain under Dutch rule until 1664, when it came under English control and was named New York, after the Duke of York (later becoming James II of England).  New York would remain a British colony until 1783, when the British departed the city at the conclusion of the American Revolutionary War.

New York is one of the most visited cities in the world and has over 65 million visitors a year.  Nearly 1.25 million British visit New York each year, and the city has about 125,000 U.K. citizens living there permanently.  One of the best things to do in New York is attend a Broadway show.  There are 41 Broadway theatres with a total audience of nearly 15 million each year.  New York’s theatre scene is a great example of the strong cultural ties between America and Great Britain.  Over the years there have been many talented British directors and actors to make their mark on Broadway, from Andrew Lloyd Webber to Daniel Radcliffe.

The economy of the New York metropolitan area is huge.  If New York were its own country, it would be the tenth largest economy in the world (almost as big as Brazil).  Having 73 Fortune 500 companies based in the metropolitan area, New York has the largest number of corporate headquarters in the Untied States.  It is the leading financial center in the world and is the home to financial institutions like JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and American Express.  It is also home to Wall Street and the two largest stock exchanges in the world by market capitalization—the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq.

John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is New York’s primary international airport.  Over 90 airlines operate out of JFK, including five that have nonstop service to London: British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Norwegian Air, American Airlines, and Delta Airlines.  Virgin Atlantic also provides service to Manchester, and Delta Airlines has service to Edinburgh along with seasonal service to Glasgow.  Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in New Jersey, across the Hudson River from Manhattan, has nonstop service to London-Heathrow via British Airways and United Airlines flies to London-Heathrow and Edinburgh.

New York is home to one of eight British consulates in the United States, providing services to British nationals in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Fairfield County (Connecticut).  If you are a British national and require urgent assistance, you can reach the consulate by calling +1 212 745 0200.  The British consulate in New York can also provide an emergency passport if you are stuck abroad and need to return quickly to the United Kingdom.
