British Passport Phoenix
Phoenix is the capital of Arizona and is the largest city in the Mountain Time Zone. The Phoenix Metropolitan Area has a population of 4.8 million—the tenth largest metropolitan area in the United States—and is one of the fastest growing cities in America. New residents and businesses come here for the low cost of living and year-round warm weather. Phoenix gets more sunshine than any other major city on the planet. The Phoenix Metropolitan Area, also known as the Valley, includes the cities of Casa Grande, Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale, Maricopa, Mesa, Peoria, Scottsdale, Surprise, and Tempe.
The Valley was inhabited by the Hohokam, an indigenous people native to the American Southwest whose pottery, canals, ballcourts, platforms mounds, and other archeological sites can be visited today. This civilization collapsed about 100 years before the arrival of the first European explorers. The name “Phoenix” was given by an Englishman, Phillip Darrell Duppa, one of the founders of the city. Recognizing that he stood on land previously inhabited by an ancient civilization, he suggested the name Phoenix to show how the city would spring to life from the ruins of this old civilization.
This city did indeed rise from the ashes, especially after World War II as high-tech industries moved into the Valley to establish manufacturing operations, taking advantage of the deep labor pool of military veterans who trained at air force bases and remained in the area after the war. Apart from the Great Recession starting in 2008, when over 300,000 jobs were lost, the Phoenix economy has maintained consistent growth over the years. The Valley has a strong base of semiconductor, electronics, and aerospace manufacturers. Real estate, construction, healthcare, financial services, and tourism are also major components of the Valley’s economy.
Phoenix and the state of Arizona are popular tourist destination thanks to the warm and sunny winter weather. The Valley has over 200 golf courses, 500 hotels, and 40 resorts. The city of Scottsdale is probably the most well known for having some of the best spa resorts, golf courses, shopping, fine dining, and nightlife. The state of Arizona has many natural attractions and beautiful towns such as the Grand Canyon, Lake Havasu, Painted Desert, Petrified Forest, Monument Valley, Kartchner Caverns, Saguaro National Park, Tombstone, Bisbee, Prescott, and Sedona.
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) is the city’s primary airport and has nonstop flights to more than 100 cities worldwide, including London. British Airways and American Airlines both have nonstop service to London-Heathrow. Phoenix is a 5-hour drive to Los Angeles via Interstate 10 and Las Vegas is also about 5 hours away on US-93 N. Driving to Sedona takes about 2 hours and the drive to the Grand Canyon takes about 4 hours. For those adventurous types that need to make a “run for the border”, it is a 3-hour drive to Sonoyta, Mexico and 4 ½ hours to the beaches of Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point).
Phoenix does not have a British consulate, so if you are a British national living in or visiting Arizona and require urgent assistance, you must call the British consulate in Los Angeles by dialing +1 310 789 0031. The British consulate in Los Angeles can also provide an emergency passport if you are stuck abroad and need to return quickly to the United Kingdom.
