British Passport Portland

Portland is the most populous city in the state of Oregon and the second-most populous city in the Pacific Northwest after Seattle.  The Portland metropolitan area has a population of 2.5 million people and is the 25th most populous metropolis in the United States.  The city is located on the Columbia and Willamette Rivers, which meet on the northern end of the Willamette Valley.  The valley stretches for 150 miles between forested mountains containing lush farmland and scenic views.  Over 250 agricultural items are produced here, including award winning wines (Pinot noir) and hops used in the production of craft beer.

British explorers James Cook and George Vancouver were some of the first Europeans to set eyes on the Oregon coast and chart this land in the late 18th century.  American explorers Lewis and Clark, dispatched by Thomas Jefferson to map the Pacific Northwest, would use the information first gathered by the British to help with their expedition.  William Robert Broughton, of the Royal Navy, was the first to see the Willamette River during the Vancouver Expedition.  He also named Mt. Hood in honor of Royal Navy officer Samuel Hood.  British fur trader, David Thompson, was the first European to navigate the entire Columbia River in 1811.

While the early economy of Portland and the Oregon Country depended on the fur trade and agricultural commodities such as timber and wheat, the modern Portland economy is comprised of a diverse mix of industries that include software, bioscience, healthcare, semiconductor and electronic components, athletic and outdoor apparel, food and beverage, and advanced manufacturing of metals and aerospace products.  The Portland metropolitan area is home to two Fortune 500 companies—athletic apparel maker Nike and metal fabrication company Precision Castparts.  The area is also home to 84 breweries, the most of any city in the world.

Portland has become a popular tourist destination that receives over 25 million visitors per year.  Tourists are drawn to the city’s beautiful parks, unique neighborhoods, and vibrant culinary scene.  But the real attraction of Portland is the natural landscape outside the city.  Just a 1 ½ hour drive west from the city, visitors will find the magnificent Oregon coast that is sure to delight all travelers with its charming small towns, fresh ocean air, and gorgeous sunsets.  East of the city is Mount Hood and the Columbia River Gorge, which has many scenic views and waterfalls.  South of Portland is the Willamette Valley, home to over 600 wineries.

Portland International Airport (PDX) is the primary commercial airport serving the Portland metropolitan area and state of Oregon.  PDX has nonstop flights to over 70 destinations, including 11 international destinations.  Delta Airlines operates seasonal nonstop service to London-Heathrow, and British Airways is planning nonstop service to London-Heathrow from Portland in 2020.  It is about a 10-hour flight between the two cities.  For those needing to make a quick trip to the San Francisco Bay Area, United and Alaska Airlines both have nonstop flights throughout the day to San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

Portland does not have a British consulate, so if you are a British national living in or visiting the state of Oregon and require urgent assistance, you must call the British consulate in San Francisco by dialing +1 415-617-1300.  The British consulate in San Francisco can also provide an emergency passport if you are stuck abroad and need to return quickly to the United Kingdom.  It is about a 9-hour drive to San Francisco from Portland on Interstate 5 traveling south, then Interstate 505 south and Interstate 80 west.
