Captain George Vancouver of the British Royal Navy was the first European to land in present-day Seattle in May 1792. With its abundance of timber, logging was the major industry of Seattle in the early days. Seattle would continue to be an important shipbuilding center during World War I, and then became a focal point for aircraft production during World War II thanks to the capabilities of The Boeing Company to meet the US government’s demand for airplanes. Although they recently moved their corporate headquarters to Chicago, Boeing is still the largest private employer in Seattle. The metropolitan area has 11 Fortune 500 companies including famous consumer brands like Starbucks, Nordstrom, Costco, Amazon, and Microsoft. Seattle is the 11th largest metropolitan economy in the United States.

British Airways and Virgin Atlantic both offer nonstop service to London-Heathrow; American Airlines will begin nonstop service to London-Heathrow in March 2021. Norwegian Air provides seasonal service to London-Gatwick. Sea-Tac is a hub for Alaska Airlines and for Delta Airlines’ Asia routes. Alaska, Delta, and United Airlines offer several flights throughout the day to San Francisco.
