British Passport Tampa
The city of Tampa, located in the West Central region of Florida on the Gulf Coast, is one of the three principal cities (the other two being St. Petersburg and Clearwater) that make up the Tampa Bay Area. The Tampa Bay Area is the 18th-largest metropolis in the United States and has a population of 3.1 million people. The metro area includes the counties of Hillsborough, Pinellas, Citrus, and Manatee, along with the towns of Brandon, Palm Harbor, Dunedin, Largo, Tarpon Springs, and Bradenton. Although not officially part of the Tampa Bay Area, nearby Sarasota and Siesta Key are popular destinations for British visitors and permanent residents.
The Tampa Bay Area receives about 30 million visitors per year, which includes roughly a half-million British visitors. They come for the beautiful scenery, white sandy beaches, and sunny weather. The Tampa Bay Area averages 361 sunny days per year, and St. Petersburg—known as the “Sunshine City”—broke the Guinness World Record for most consecutive days of sunshine at 768 days. The beaches of Fort De Soto Park, near St. Petersburg, are rated as some of the best beaches in America. St. Pete Beach, Clearwater Beach, Sand Key, Indian Rocks Beach, Madeira Beach, and Siesta Beach (near Sarasota) are just a few of the popular beaches in the area.
While Tampa is home to several major family-friendly attractions such as Busch Gardens and Adventure Island, the Tampa Bay Area has plenty of cultural attractions including museums, art galleries, murals, live music venues, festivals, sporting events, boutique shopping, and outdoor markets. St. Petersburg has several art districts where visitors can enjoy studio tours and art walks. The Dalí Museum and Chihuly Collection (at the Morean Arts Center) are two of the best art collections in St. Petersburg. British visitors also love the many delicious seafood restaurants located along Tampa Bay and the Gulf shoreline with spectacular views of the water.
The Tampa Bay Area economy is the 25th-largest economy in the U.S. and has a gross domestic product (GDP) of about $150 billion per year, which is slightly larger than the entire nation of Hungary. The metropolis is home to several Fortune 500 companies and has a strong foundation of financial services and information technology firms. Tampa is considered a gateway to what is known as the Florida High Tech Corridor, a 23-county region that ties high-tech startup businesses with research teams at Florida’s public universities. Just as in other parts of Florida, there are numerous British-owned companies and small businesses operating in Tampa.
Tampa International Airport (TPA) is the primary commercial airport serving the Tampa Bay Area. TPA has nonstop flights to over 70 destinations, including 14 international destinations. There is a nonstop flight from London-Gatwick to TPA on British Airways. The flight takes about 9 ½ hours and the aircraft used is a Boeing 777. TPA is located just 5 miles west of downtown Tampa and is 30 minutes across the bay by car to Clearwater Beach, and 1 hour by car to Sarasota. American Airlines has flights to Miami for those passengers flying internationally from Miami International Airport, or who need to visit the British consulate.
Tampa does not have a British consulate, so if you are a British national living in or visiting the state of Florida and require urgent assistance, you must call the British consulate in Miami by dialing +1 305-400-6400. The British consulate in Miami can also provide an emergency passport if you are stuck abroad and need to return quickly to the United Kingdom. It is about a 4-hour drive to Miami from Tampa.
