British Passport Vancouver

Vancouver is the third-largest city in Canada and is the most populous city in the province of British Columbia.  Situated in western Canada in a beautiful ecological environment, Vancouver is known as being one of the world’s most livable cities and gets high marks in quality of life surveys.  Although Vancouver sees its fair share of rain throughout much of the year, it also enjoys some of Canada’s mildest wintertime temperatures.  The metropolitan area of Vancouver—known as Greater Vancouver—has a population of 2.5 million people and includes the municipalities of North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, Surrey, White Rock, and extends east to Mission, Chilliwack, and Abbotsford.

The British have a long history in this part of the world dating back to the voyage of Sir Francis Drake in the late 16th century up until the 21st century with the visit of Queen Elizabeth II in 2002.  Legendary British explorer Captain James Cook landed on Vancouver Island in 1778 and Royal Navy officer, George Vancouver, explored and surveyed the British Columbia coastline in 1792, naming many of the geographical features of the region after his patrons, friends, and crew.  Vancouver Island and the city of Vancouver are, of course, named after George Vancouver.  Nowadays there are about 40,000 U.K. citizens living in Greater Vancouver.

Nearly half of Vancouver’s population has ethnic origins from Europe (mostly from the British Isles) but there is also a large population of Chinese, many of whom immigrated into the city from British Hong Kong during the uncertainty surrounding the transfer of power of the territory from the United Kingdom to China in the late 20th century.  To this day, there are still waves of immigrants from both Mainland China and Hong Kong seeking the safety and prosperity of this great city that was built on the foundation of the Anglosphere traditions of democracy, the rule of low, economic freedom, and individual liberty.

As a major gateway to the Pacific Rim and its proximity to west coast cities of the United States, Greater Vancouver has a strong and diverse economy based on the mining and trading of natural resources, banking and finance, film and television production, digital entertainment, housing and construction, transportation, technology (life sciences and information technology), specialty apparel, and tourism.  Over 10 million tourists visit Vancouver each year, including about 160,000 visitors from the United Kingdom.  Visitors love the multitude of trendy neighborhoods and natural beauty of the city, along with its accessibility to some of the world’s best national parks and ski resorts.

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is the primary commercial airport serving the Greater Vancouver area and is the second busiest airport in Canada. YVR is located just 12 kilometers from downtown Vancouver and is one of the few major international airports that has a terminal dedicated for floatplanes (seaplanes).  The airport serves 120 destinations worldwide, including 10 cities in Europe, 4 in Australia and New Zealand, and 20 across Asia.  YVR has more direct flights to China than any other airport in North America. British Airways and Air Canada both provide nonstop service to London-Heathrow.

Vancouver is home to one of five British consulates located in Canada.  The consulate in Vancouver provides services to British nationals living in or visiting the province of British Columbia, the Yukon, and Northwest Territories.  If you are a British national and require urgent assistance, you can reach the consulate by calling +1 604 683 4421.  The British consulate in Vancouver can also provide an emergency passport if you are stuck abroad and need to return quickly to the United Kingdom.
