Washington, D.C. is the capital of the United States and is an important global city that attracts visitors from all over the world.  The Washington, D.C. Washington is a planned city whose land was set aside by the U.S. Constitution to create a federal district—known as the District of Columbia.   The city of Washington was named after George Washington, America’s first president and military general during the Revolutionary War.  Peter Charles L’Enfant and Scottish-born Alexander Ralston were commissioned by the U.S. government to build this new city.  British architects William Thornton and Benjamin Henry Latrobe designed the Capitol Building.  The British would also be responsible for setting fire to this building (and the White House) during the War of 1812.

Nearly 24 million visitors come to Washington, D.C. each year, including over 200,000 visitors from the United Kingdom. Tourism plays a major role in the city’s economy, and there is no shortage of attractions to keep visitors occupied. There are plenty of landmarks such as the Lincoln Memorial and National Mall along with many excellent museums like the Smithsonian and International Spy Museum, where you can learn about real-world, James Bond type of exploits. Washington, D.C. is also a wonderful place to enjoy fine dining, nightlife, and shopping, especially in Georgetown, one of the city’s most charming and historic neighborhoods.

Metropolitan Area is the fifth-largest economy in the United States and is also known to have the most educated workforce.  Outside of government, where 25% of employees in Washington, D.C. work, there is large cluster of businesses dedicated to biotechnology, telecommunications, defense contracting, cybersecurity and other security technologies.  BAE Systems is a British defense and aerospace company with U.S. headquarters in Arlington, Virginia.  Just 19 miles away, in Reston, Virginia, is the U.S. headquarters for Rolls-Royce North America, a British manufacturer of jet engines and other aerospace products.
